“Digital marketing is an easy way to make a $1000.”
You’ve heard it before, and so did. I ended up getting into digital marketing.
Before getting into digital marketing, I was a happy and content, content writer. My English writing skills improved exponentially because of content writing.
After a year or so, I decided it was time to explore something new. So, I started learning about SEO and digital marketing. Digital marketing fascinated me, and after a short time, I gained surface-level knowledge about digital marketing and started my career in this field.
Here are 5 of the many mistakes I made in my digital marketing journey, that hopefully you can avoid:
-
Not starting early enough.
Why is not starting early enough listed as a mistake?
Stick with me for a bit.
Digital marketing is a very competitive niche. Everyone wants to become a digital marketer to make vast sums of money. There is a lot of competition, and the industry has giants like Neil Patel and Ryan Deiss.
It’s hard for a newcomer to make his place in the digital marketing industry. The odds were not, particularly in my favor.
Starting early allows you to get better at your craft before some new guy comes in and takes away a share of your earnings.
I enjoy digital marketing and want to pursue it further as a career. Not starting early enough was a mistake for me.
-
Going in without a plan.
When I was starting marketing for clients, I wouldn’t make up a very detailed plan.
It was faster to make a Facebook ad campaign, launch it, and get some conversions. Creating a proper and descriptive marketing plan just took too long.
In hindsight, it was a huge mistake to start a digital marketing campaign without a plan.
Clients have expectations, and that’s reasonable. They’re paying a marketer to do things in a way that the client wants to get done. Launching campaigns without telling the client why I’m starting them and not getting them approved first caused me trouble that I do not want to go through again.
I’ve learned from my mistake and now always make a robust and detailed plan before initiating my marketing efforts. Going in without a plan is foolish, and nothing good can come out of it.
-
Not marketing myself properly.
Why is a client going to entrust me with his digital marketing campaigns when I can’t even market myself properly?
If I can’t appeal to a client, the chances are that I won’t be able to appeal to a client’s target audience.
Having a relevant and organic social media following are a few things that a client can appreciate. In my humble beginnings, I didn’t have much for a social media following. Compared to social media giants, I still have a ways to go. Now I’m at a place where I can leverage my social media following and get a client interested in hiring me.
-
Getting insights from analytics tools much later on.
Analytics and understanding of data are essential. I always knew they were important, so I made sure to check on them frequently. The one thing I didn’t do was use analytics to make my marketing efforts even more sublime.
Learning how to use analytics to my advantage took a while. After consulting a few videos and blogs online about analytics, I was able to have a much better practical grasp on analytics as a whole.
Facebook and Google both provide brilliant analytics tools. I used to get the average conversion rate without using analytics, which is not too shabby, but with analytics, I was able to get slightly above average conversion rates.
These improved conversion rates allowed me to get a raise from my clients. Who doesn’t like more compensation for your hard work? Learning to use analytics to my advantage did take a while to get used to, but in the end, it was worth it.

Engaging with the audience? WE DON’T DO THAT HERE!
Writing meaningful comments on a post or answering questions on a forum takes too long. You need to know what you’re talking about to make a real difference.
By this point, I knew a little more than I used to. I’d gotten better with clients and analytics, so I was a little more confident at answering questions.
I started to answer a few questions on different forums here and there but nothing too serious.
Having this sporadic approach did nothing for my benefit and wasted my time, so I decided not to engage with people.
By not engaging with people, I wanted to be in contact with like-minded people, I was at a disadvantage. I only realized what I was missing out on after I read a few articles on why engaging with audiences is necessary.
With new knowledge on why engagement is meaningful, I started engaging with people online again. It was hard to get noticed. It took quite a while to make a difference, but after a few months, I could see exponential growth in my following. Having this growth gave me the insights I needed to improve my skills as a marketer.
I realized that people wanted to get help. Most people were generally kind and wanted to hear more from me and see what I had to share after I had helped them.
I applied this engagement plus mindset in my digital marketing pursuits. And it did help me out quite a bit.
Now I utilize to live chat app to engage with visitors on my website as it is more real time and current. Many websites still do not have live chat software integrated into website. Live Chat industry has great potential as it helps greatly in increasing conversion rates.
Conclusion:
I’ve grown quite a bit now, as a person and as a marketer as well. My skills in marketing have increased significantly, and I don’t trip up as often as I’d used too.
Digital marketing has been a life-changer for me. I’ve been able to meet some fantastic individuals and work in different environments. If I hadn’t made the switch from content writing, this success wouldn’t have been possible. I still do write content, but only as a means to promote my marketing activities.
