When you think about online shopping, you probably think instantly about sites that you visit or those that are familiar as part of the popular lexicon. But do you ever think about how online shopping has evolved, or even what its origins are?
Online shopping actually can trace its roots to something a little different — shopping channels such as QVC and the Home Shopping Network. People would tune into these in order to check out everything from beauty items to appliances. They’d be drawn in by personalities that were selling items, and then they’d call a number to place an order.
What changed all that, of course, was books — specifically, the book retailer Amazon. Amazon used to be just books and nothing more, but now of course they sell virtually everything. And how we pay for items has also changed from that phone call. How else has online shopping changed? This graphic explains it.
