As millions of people join the freelance workforce every year, the gig economy is a booming industry that many of us are a part of in one way or another. And while some work a full time job with a gig on the side, a big percentage consider side hustles their main source of income, working multiple jobs as serial side hustlers.
A side hustle can be anything from freelance work like graphic design or consulting, to service industry jobs such as foodservice or childcare, to app-based services like rideshare driving or food delivery, to online gigs such as surveys and reviews. Whichever type of side hustle you have, it’s bound to consume time and energy, hence the importance of properly managing your gigs.
Whether you’re new to side hustling or already have lots of experience, here are some tips on being a successful serial side hustler.
1. Follow a schedule
With any kind of side hustles, time management can be your biggest pitfall or your reason for success. Especially if you already have a full-time job, continuing to work in your free time may be a challenge to stay disciplined and organized. Consider creating a schedule where you block off specific time for each project or gig so that you can maintain a routine and get things done on time. Of course, don’t forget to schedule breaks and time to relax so you don’t risk burning out.
2. Set achievable goals
Since you’re your own boss in the side hustle world, make sure to set goals for yourself to give side hustling a broader sense of purpose and direction. Whether you want to earn a certain amount, get your 10,000 hours of practice in one area, or work with a specific high-level client, give yourself something to strive for in your work so that it’s more than just day in day out.
3. Switch it up
Avoid boredom and burnout by taking up different jobs in different industries. Working on the same projects and tasks all the time can get tiring and dampen your motivation to continue. Diversify your side hustles to enjoy yourself more and to potentially learn new skills.
